Key stroke – also called key travel – is the physical distance a key moves from its resting position to the point where it bottoms out. It is measured in millimeters and has a surprisingly large impact on how a keyboard feels to type on.
A standard desktop mechanical keyboard typically has a key stroke of around 3.5 to 4.0 mm. A modern ultrabook laptop might have just 1.0 to 1.5 mm. That difference of a couple of millimeters might sound trivial on paper, but your fingers notice it immediately. Key stroke and actuation point are related but different concepts, and confusing them is common.
Total travel (key stroke) is the full distance from top to bottom – the complete journey when you press a key all the way down.
Actuation point is the distance at which the keypress actually registers. On a typical mechanical switch with 4 mm total travel, the actuation point might be at 2.0 mm. This means the key registers halfway through the stroke – you do not need to bottom out for the computer to recognize your input.
This distinction matters for speed. Fast typists and gamers often learn to press keys just past the actuation point without bottoming out, which reduces finger travel and can increase typing speed. The Relationship Between Key Stroke and Fatigue
Ergonomics researchers have studied the relationship between key travel and typing comfort extensively. The consensus is nuanced.
Very short key travel (under 1.0 mm) tends to increase typing errors and can cause finger fatigue because users unconsciously tense their fingers to avoid accidental presses. Very long key travel (over 4.5 mm) can also cause fatigue because fingers have to work harder on each stroke.
The sweet spot for most people falls between 1.5 mm and 4.0 mm, depending on personal preference and typing style. If you are typing for hours at a stretch – writing, coding, data entry – key travel is worth paying attention to. When shopping for a laptop, key stroke is rarely listed on the main spec sheet. You might find it buried in detailed reviews or on the manufacturer’s spec page. But it is one of the most impactful daily-use factors, especially if you type a lot.
As a rule of thumb, look for at least 1.2 mm of key travel on a Chromebook or budget laptop, and 1.5 mm or more on a machine you plan to use as your primary work device. Business-class laptops tend to prioritize keyboard quality, often offering 1.5 to 1.8 mm of travel even in thin chassis designs.
For 2-in-1 PCs with detachable keyboards, pay extra attention. The keyboard cover needs to be thin enough to serve as a tablet cover, which often pushes key travel below 1.2 mm. Some models handle this trade-off better than others.

1. Match Key Stroke to Your Primary Use Case
If you type for a living – writing, coding, customer support – prioritize deeper key travel (1.5 mm minimum for laptops, 3.5 mm+ for desktops). If your work is more mouse-driven or touch-driven, shorter key travel is a perfectly fine trade-off for a thinner, lighter device.
2. Try Before You Buy Whenever Possible
Key stroke is one of those specs that reads differently on paper than it feels in person. A 1.5 mm keyboard from one manufacturer can feel entirely different from another at the same depth due to switch resistance, keycap shape, and key spacing. Visit a store, try demo units, or order from retailers with good return policies.
3. Consider an External Keyboard as a Complement
If you love a laptop for everything except its keyboard, you do not have to compromise. A good mechanical keyboard or electrostatic capacitive keyboard at your desk gives you the deep, satisfying key travel for long typing sessions, while the laptop’s built-in keyboard handles portable use just fine.
