What is 5G?
5G (fifth-generation) is the latest standard for mobile wireless networks, succeeding 4G LTE. It brings three major improvements: faster speeds (theoretical peak of 20 Gbps), lower latency (as low as 1ms in theory), and massive device density (up to one million devices per square kilometer).
In everyday terms, 5G means quicker downloads, smoother streaming, more responsive cloud gaming, and better performance in crowded areas like stadiums and transit hubs. Carriers worldwide have been rolling out 5G coverage since 2019-2020, and the network continues to expand each year.

These are theoretical maximums. In real-world conditions, 5G typically delivers speeds of a few hundred Mbps to a few Gbps, which is still a substantial jump over what most people experience on 4G.
Sub-6 vs. mmWave: Two Flavors of 5G
5G operates on two broad frequency bands, and the difference matters quite a bit.
- Sub-6 GHz: Uses frequencies below 6 GHz, similar to 4G bands. It offers wide coverage and decent building penetration. The vast majority of 5G coverage you’ll encounter uses Sub-6. Think of it as “5G everywhere” – moderately faster than 4G, but available broadly.
- mmWave (millimeter wave): Uses extremely high frequencies (24-40 GHz). It can deliver blistering speeds – several Gbps in ideal conditions – but the signal doesn’t travel far and gets blocked easily by walls, trees, and even rain. Currently limited to dense urban spots, stadiums, and airports.
Most 5G phones support Sub-6. Fewer support mmWave, and coverage is still sparse outside of major metro areas.
5G SA vs. NSA
Early 5G deployments use NSA (Non-Standalone) mode, which piggybacks on existing 4G core infrastructure while using 5G radio frequencies. This gets 5G speeds out to users quickly, but doesn’t unlock 5G’s full potential.
SA (Standalone) mode uses a dedicated 5G core network, enabling features like ultra-low latency, network slicing (dedicated virtual networks for specific applications), and better efficiency. Carriers are gradually transitioning to SA as they build out infrastructure.
What 5G Enables
- Video streaming: 4K streaming is smoother and more reliable. Large files download in seconds rather than minutes.
- Cloud gaming: Lower latency makes cloud-based gaming platforms far more responsive, approaching the feel of local gaming.
- Tethering and fixed wireless: 5G phones can serve as a viable internet source for laptops and tablets, and carriers offer 5G home internet as a cable/fiber alternative in some areas.
- IoT and smart devices: The massive device density of 5G opens the door for smart cities, connected vehicles, and industrial IoT at a scale 4G couldn’t handle.
How to Choose
1. Check 5G Coverage in Your Area
Before making 5G a priority in your phone purchase, check your carrier’s 5G coverage map for the areas where you live, work, and commute. Outside 5G zones, your phone automatically falls back to 4G – so in areas without coverage, a 5G phone gives you no speed advantage.
2. Verify Band Compatibility on Unlocked (SIM-Free) Phones
If you’re buying an unlocked phone, make sure it supports the 5G bands your carrier uses. Different carriers use different frequencies, and phones from international manufacturers may not support all local bands. Check the manufacturer’s spec page against your carrier’s band list.
3. Factor in Battery Life
5G radios consume more power than 4G, especially on mmWave. Look for phones with adequate battery capacity (4,500mAh or more is a good starting point), or make sure the phone supports smart 5G/4G switching to conserve power when 5G speeds aren’t needed. Having fast charging support is a nice safety net for heavy 5G users.
